Notable Crocheting throughout History
There are many theories on the origin of crochet, but it remains a mystery. The first printed pattern was from 1824, but where the art began could go back a century prior to that or even a thousand years before that. Crochet in Ireland
It is believed by some that Irish Crochet was developed as distraction to the potato famine during the mid 1800’s. Others believe it was just coincidence, but it developed more quickly and spread rapidly due to the failing potato crops and families needing a new source of income.

Irish Crochet focuses on motifs and mesh connections for a very intricate lace look. Completed projects can be freeform, as different motifs are assembled using various seaming or meshing techniques. Many also have a texture and height to them for added effect and are not the normal crochet piece that lies flat.
Crochet in the United States
While crocheting was quite popular over in Europe, it wasn’t as prevalent across the pond. After World War II crocheting’s popularity began to pick up speed and in the 1970’s it was mainstream and a lot of it was granny squares.

Granny squares have been in pattern books since the late 1800’s, but they were all the rage with bright colors in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Fashion keeps trying to bring them back, so the granny square still lingers on.
